How Life is Measured?

...by the amount of "sleeps"

I am now going to live as my 3 1/2 year old does, by the amount of sleeps left until something great will take place. This was the best week for "how many sleeps until?"...

"How many sleeps until the Halloween Parade?"

"How many sleeps until daddy gets home?"

"How many sleeps until trick-or-treat?"

"How many sleeps until Caitlin's party at school?"

"How many sleeps until... to be continued"

I decided that I will live this way... :) - two more sleeps until the day I clean the bathrooms, three more sleeps until my favorite TV show is on, one more sleep until the weekend! It is so much fun anticipating the inevidable by the amount of sleeps.

Carson, you sure do put a smile on my face...

He comes over to me several times throughout the day... does this feel good mom? As he gently touches my hair, arm, or leg. There seems to be a motive, "can you do that to me?" It is such a subtle way, or at church he bluntly states "RUB ME."

Caitlin was very "witchy" at her class party yesterday. Being in the busy first grade classroom of twenty-four, a great reminder to me why I am home and not teaching, HALLOWEEN PARTIES! It was fun to see her interactions with friends and other parents. I seem to be questioning my parenting skills a lot these days, so it was good to see my seven-year-old being polite.

Caitlin is still by far the best helper of the house, as I watched her folding laundry in the family room. Thank heavens for small favors, and thank you Caitlin!

Carly went last evening trick-or-treating for the first time. She was not really a beggar for candy, she just wanted to kiss the other kids or play in the candy bowls. I love to play in candy bowls too! :) Pictures to come!

Halloween Happenings...

I left off last with the great pumpkin carving marathon taking place on the kitchen floor. It was a spectacular sight of children ewwwwing over pumpkin guts and Carly trying to eat them. Everyone went to bed as the master carver set out to do his work. He carved an excellent pumpkin, even though I was not allowed to view the masterpiece until the very end. His multitasking skills are somewhat a struggle sometimes, since he was trying to talk to his dad and carve at the same time. He was putting his finishing touches and cleaning it up over the trash, I hear a large thud followed by a "(censored)!" Yes, the front of the pumpkin fell off into the trash... with a little help from toothpicks he pieced it back together, lit it up, and turned for my approval. It was my little "Animal" from the Muppets. That is Carly's nickname. Unfortunately, I found the master carver's pumkin face lying face down in the mulch yesterday... so much for those toothpicks.

The best part of our "Halloween Week" (as we like to call it in Findlay), is that the real trick-or-treat has not even taken place yet, but we have stories. Last night was the annual parade downtown. It is about the same scale as the Macy's parade with about the same amount of spectators. You line up for hours, and wait your turn to be called to line, then you GO! It is a mad dash down Main Street. You hand enormous amounts of candy to all the beggars lined along the street. Long story short, a two hour wait for a 20 minute mad dashing of candy tossing. Best part of the story, freezing rain... sleet... and wind. Yes, I could not let the children down as they wanted to walk with the St. Michael Float, while their digits were practically frozen off. We survived, but we thought maybe next year we would like to be a beggar. Oh, did I mention daddy was out of town so we were there without him? Sorry no pictures, my hands were similar to ICE scultptures you would find at a wedding! You know who was the best trooper of all? Carson... he never complained or moved for the matter. He was a HOT DOG in the wagon just taking it all in.

Carson has been running around listening to his shuffle and getting his groove on. He has been quite a little "rump-shaker" when the music is playing, and so has Carly. For the love of music in this house!

Yesterday, the train engineer came by and threw a sack out of the train for Carson. It was a NS railway winter cap. He LOVES it! He has become such a star with these train guys. He still does not miss the train as it rolls by.

He has also been decorating with these little Christmas lights. The kids all have these decorative lights in their room, but Carson seems to think that my kitchen cupboards need them too.

Caitlin has had two great nights because daddy has been gone, so she gets his place in bed. It seems to make it easier on her with her crazy emotions. Although, now she wants a bed warmer for her bed, since she got to control her side.

She got her first, first grade report card yesterday. It was excellent, not that I was worried... but it is always nice to have reassurance. She is now selling candy, nuts, and chocolate for Girl Scouts. Since we don't have fundraisers for her school, this is her first opportunity to sell, sell, sell! Thanks to Stephanie for her first purchase!

Carly spent some time with Uncle Jeff last night, I did not want to take her to the parade... so they bonded, ate pizza, and watched TV. She is by far the easiest going Koomen kid. Her new favorite words are "hot dog" and "pizza." Hot dog being her brother's costume and pizza being her favorite food.

Well, tomorrow Carson and I are helping at Caitlin's class party. I am sure there will be a lot to be said the next time I blog. PICTURE POSTING TOMORROW!

Change...

I hear the kids talk about how dark it is and that it is almost bedtime... and it is only 6:00 p.m. I never thought of those early dark nights as such a necessity. Now the leaves have changed and are starting to litter the green yard with yellows, oranges, and reds. Carson is anticipating a large pile to jump into. He calls it a "dogpile" for some reason, maybe because last fall we buried Philly in the leaves and took pictures.

Another period of change that is coming is the election. I feel that I have well educated my children about how a new president is going to be elected. They see pictures in Time magazine, ads, and hear the phone ringing with "election" business. Carson and Caitlin both recognize each candidate as well as their vice president. Carson even shocked me with his knowledge of knowing when the "National Anthem" was played at Sarah Palin's rally last week. He called it out by name right away, when I asked him how he remembered the name? He stated, "from going to watch his daddy run, and they played it at the beginning." If only memory worked like that for everyone, but it all changes over time.... just like everything else.

It is a cute time of change for Caitlin as we sing the song from the Chipmunks, "All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth." She finally pulled the other front tooth, but it take some parent enforcement (never mind that I locked her in the bathroom and told her that dinner was not to be served until the tooth was out). Come on... the tooth was hanging there and it was more of a toy for her tongue.

Caitlin and I went to see "Annie Jr." at St. Michael's Thursday night. It was so fun... she could not wait to be in 6th grade so that she could play the part of Annie. I did not have the heart to tell her that "Annie" would probably not be the play that they would be doing when she was in middle school.

Carly still awaits the arrival of her two front teeth as well... or for that matter ANY teeth. Okay, so she has the two that she got right at her first birthday, but that was three months ago. She is such a pistol. Her favorite place to get into is the cereal cupboard, but thank goodness for Pampered Chef TWIXITS... this place would be littered with Frosted Flakes and Cheerios for sure. She is such a mockingbird now, just a sponge for words. My favorite word as I get picked on for because I am such a manners nazi is... "PEAZ" it is just too precious. As always, that cute little voice will CHANGE.

The last item of change this evening has been watching the pumpkins evolve from plain orange pumpkins to beautifully carved faces with and without teeth. All three kids de-gutted, carved, and lit their pumpkins. Of course, we anxiously await the completion of dad's pumpkin. He waits until everyone is asleep and does something AMAZING. So stay tuned for more change to come...

Sarah Palin for VP Photos

At the Sarah Palin rally in Findlay
Secret Service Agent Eric that took us to the front of the line and to the front of the people in the "Buffer" area. It was so exciting to have connections in the SSA... - Thank Mary.... and Katie!

I SHOOK SARAH PALIN'S HAND!

Okay, so the blogs are supposed to be about the kids, but today it is about me...
I was wanting the week to go fast for many reasons; because I simply just want Friday to come and go as I wait for the pathology report from the doctor's office. So I feel like having a selfish moment... forgive me.

My girlfriend called, and her sister is on the campaign trail as a secret service agent with Sarah Palin, she wanted me to go to her rally in Findlay. I really wanted to go, but the lines and the fact that she would be so far away would probably just make it ordinary... in a matter of minutes it became extraordinary.

Let me just start by staying... there will be a ton of pictures coming, but not from my camera because the battery was at home in the wall. Thank goodness the girls had their cameras.

The line was long, but the adorable SSA Eric, was waiting for us. He took us to the front, through the metal detectors, and right to the podium where she was going to be standing. We listened to Lee Greenwood sing, we cheered her on, and WE SHOOK THEIR HANDS! Please stand by for pictures. I am crazy with excitement, so this could be a scatterbrained blog!

Another Week Gone By...

I used to worry about bottles, burping, and baby food... no more. I worry about crayons, pens, electrical outlets, unlocked cupboards, and silence. With Carly, I worry about silence. She has entered a new world, "toddler-hood." There is nothing that would surprise me about this determined, red-headed, youngest and last of the Koomen children in the house. She is so unlike the other two... I am not sure how or why, but I just know it. She colors on things, she runs away from me as fast as she can, and she hovers to her fathers chest when I try to take her away. These are describing phrases of Carly. She is a mockingbird with favorite words such as; kitty cat, Cate (Caitlin), Car (Carson), mommy, daddy, apple, nana, etc.... She is loud, she is in charge, and she scares me to death :). What have we created?

Carson, I don't worry about him too much. I do worry when I hear him telling his little friend Jake, "I am home-schooled, I am mommy's GIRL, and I am never leaving her." Um, Carson, that would be "mommy's boy..." I don't care about the rest of the statement... just the GIRL part. I just want to clarify.

My dad popped in for a surprise visit... he took Carson for a ride in the big rig... Carson had an expression of pride on his face when he took off for that long ride, well just around the block. He returned to the driveway and dad offered for him to get out on the driver's side, Carson's response, "no, that is the busy side." I am thankful for those responses, because I know he listens part of the time.

He went to Build a Bear Sunday with Aunt Lauri and Chelsea. He came out smiling from ear to ear as all children should when they leave there. He was so please with himself. He also insisted on purchasing a wheelchair for his fireman bear... he stated, "he is an old fireman." So now we are the proud owners of a fireman Build-a-Bear in a wheelchair. But wait, there is more... Carson also came home with a hot dog costume, which he has decided to be for Halloween. This has taken many days to decide, since there are a BILLION ideas out there.

Caitlin continues with her busy social calendar. She went with her dad to Columbus on Saturday night in preparation for his big Marathon. She accompanied him to an Italian dinner with running friends and then stayed at the hotel with the Smith family. She was there with the rest of us to cheer dad on at the finish. Caitlin worried the whole time about him and how he felt afterward. He did fantastic and even made sports headlines! Yeah daddy!

Caitlin has hit a hard place, we are not sure why... but she has entered a negative world. We have phases of life that we go through and she has entered a phase that we are patiently awaiting the arrival of the next one. She also has learned how to have quick comebacks, she has certainly acquired this art form from her dad!

Until next time, look forward to more one-liners, antics and humor.

The Grocery and the Wine

The Wednesday shopping trip was a Tuesday morning shopping trip because Wednesday morning booked up fast. Carson, Carly and I usually head to Meijer after breakfast to fulfill our weekly menu. Carson always helps me with my list of items and Carly busily eats her way through the store while she sits in the "seat" cart. Carson normally sits beside Carly, but he has evolved into quite a little shopper. Today in the wine aisle, I picked up a bottle of wine for myself (I am going to master the fine art of wine drinking, since my husband is getting ahead of me with it). Carson belts out, you need to get home a drink that right away. Everyone in the aisle busted out with laughter considering it was 9:30 a.m. He even mentioned on the way home if I was going to drink my wine when I got home. It has been a favorite trip of his picking out wine for his dad :). I am sure there is more to come for this week.... but for now, the wine story could not go another day unheard.

The Weekend that Rocked ;)

Everyone knows I love weekends, Jason is home and school is non-existent... good ole' family time. I was not sure that this weekend was going to be stellar because my Friday morning seemed too CRAZY!

We started with church aerobics at 9:00. We try to go to school Mass every Friday because we see Caitlin and it is just good for us. Well, I was out quite late Thursday night with girl's night and I was a bit tired. I asked Caitlin if she would mind if I stayed in, and she responds with "I will cry inside if you are not there." With the fat lip and mangled teeth from the previous night's events, I could hardly reject that. So I went with snacks in the bag and a smile on the face, and we made it... in the cry room nonetheless, but we made it.

After church my girlfriend and I made a mad dash for the bank to open the coveted girl scout checking account for our troop, well that was a joke. The man could hardly understand that we were two moms with all the children in tow trying to open an account that he should already have knowledge of. NOPE! It was not simple, easy, complain free at all. "Well you will need this, that, those, these, and the other." It was nothing like described in the Girl Scout Handbook, but then again... is anything? The account is semi-opened, so let's see how it works...

Just so you know, the day improved with Carson's antics and my cleaning for company. Yes, company... It was GREAT, the Godparents came... Tim and Julie arrived in the nick of time for Caitlin's noon soccer game. We had an awesome weekend with them and of course they did not come empty handed... Carson with his tent, and the girls with their clothes!

We landed a new babysitter, which let me preface this with Carson does not like to be without his mother. Jessica came and conquered the evening while the adults went out for the most delicious and AWESOME dinner at the Revolver. We had a great time and came home to wound up children. I did forget to mention that I allowed Carson to have his first can of caffeine pop as we were walking out the door... I just wanted to leave without tears. So Carson can only have Pepsi when absolutely necessary.

We had a great Sunday with even more hyperactivity from Carson. We survived breakfast and Mass, and then waved our good-byes to Aunt Julie and Uncle Tim. We went to the Pumpkin Patch after nap. It was a great time too. Carson was in him prime riding on a trailer behind a John Deere tractor. Not to mention, we saw a four engine train on tracks not too far from the patch. We also saw five combines working in the surrounding fields. It was a Carson day!

When we arrived home, the fun began. They hauled out the paints for the pumpkins... the underlying statement there is, the mess begins. We also arrived home to costumes hanging on the door that friends had dropped by. Carson looked mighty cute in the "Dorothy and Toto" costume. Caitlin wore the Geisha costume with flair. It was comedy hour. Especially when Carson yells from his tent, "hurry dad zip it up quick, don't let the Japanese in." NICE!

Well the week chock full of activities awaits... stay tuned for more humor.

Injury Timeout

Everyone knows that the Koomen kids are a bit klutzy thanks to their dad's genes ;), but it was a busy week. Thankfully, no ER trips. :)

Carson landed his large round melon into an end table in Uncle Jeff's office... by simply tripping over his very own feet. His reward... a large EGG and a nice shiner.

Caitlin managed to clash with Alivia, her soccer teammate during a game. Her reward, mangled teeth, which we lost one the next day (baby teeth-thank goodness) and a bloody mouth.

She ended her week with a nice canker sore to top off the whole mouth trauma.

Carly was saved for the week. Her walking at times resembles a drunken sailor, so we fear the worst when she tumbles. Thankfully, the good Lord made her the STRONG child of the family.
As for the remainder of the week, we have all been eaten ALIVE by mosquitoes. They love the fair skin people. The kids each look like something from a dot-to-dot book. The bug spray just does not seem to do justice for the sweet blood that runs through their veins.

The Fun Times

This week has had its ups and downs as the weeks normally do, but mostly ups...

Caitlin successfully finished her first cross country season at Maumee Bay State Park yestereday. She seems to enjoy it, but mostly for the social reasons... and the pretty participation ribbons. Her St. Michael team placed third among all the schools in the diocese.

She went to Barnes and Noble last weekend and spent an hour in "heaven" browsing through all her favorite chapter books. As I am typing she is reading in her rocking chair to her "class." She has learned a few lessons this week, as we try to figure out as parents how to create a teachable moment from a negative experience.

Carson is proving to be our challenge at this point in time. He is needing an educational system, such a preschool to turn him around. Jason said I have created him the way he is, thanks! :)

What can I say, he LOVES his mom!

The kids had a nice surprise of Grandpa Jeff coming for a three day visit from South Dakota. The kids went for a ride in the big truck with him. He probably had to go home to get rest from all the excitement of the Koomen house.

He was playing in the basement on Thursday with grandpa and his train set. He told the "men" at the station that he closes at 5:30 p.m., without hesitation he ran over to Caitlin's dollhouse, borrowed a lamp, and set it down in the station. Then he said, "now we can stay open at dark."

He has been my constant reminder to turn on the Halloween decorations, and keep things ready for Halloween.

Among other comical sayings/events:

Carson also told his father that he has "magnificent" haircut!

As I watched him walk down the aisle at church today with the offering basket, he is still the cutest, but ornriest boy in the Koomen house!
